Remote work officially begins in the public sector

On April 2, 2026, the public sector officially introduced a remote work policy for civil servants. PASYDY secretary-general Stratis Matthaiou stated that several thousand employees have expressed interest in this new working model. The government has categorized 2026 as a transition year, limiting remote work to a maximum of 20 days, which will increase to 50 days annually starting in 2027. To participate, employees must submit a formal expression of interest and a risk assessment questionnaire. Department heads are responsible for assessing eligibility based on specific job duties, technological requirements, and operational needs. The Department of Public Administration and Personnel has provided circulars and guides to facilitate the implementation process. Technological equipment has been secured through coordination with the Department of Information Technology Services. While exact participation figures are currently pending, authorities expect interest to rise due to increasing fuel and commuting costs.
