British base authorities conduct joint operations ahead of Orthodox Easter
Authorities in the Sovereign Base Areas have conducted 10 arrests related to drug offenses, traffic violations, and untaxed goods. These arrests were made during joint security operations involving the Sovereign Base Areas Police, the Cyprus Police, the United Nations, and the customs and immigration departments. Since mid-February, officials have carried out seven specific operations in the area, with more expected in the coming days. The primary focus of the campaign is the prevention of the illegal import and use of firecrackers ahead of the Orthodox Easter holiday. Deputy Chief Inspector Markos Petrou, who oversees operations in Dhekelia, stated that coordinated efforts have successfully mitigated the smuggling of explosives through crossing points from the occupied areas. Despite the heightened security measures, no firecrackers have been confiscated to date. Authorities emphasized that the inter-agency collaboration has also helped identify and arrest individuals involved in other criminal activities.
