Magnitude 7.4 earthquake strikes Indonesia causing one death

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the Northern Molucca Sea off the coast of Indonesia on April 2, 2026. Different sources provide varying magnitude estimates, with some initially reporting 7.8 and others 7.6. The epicentre was located at a depth ranging from 10 to 35 km, approximately 120 km from Ternate city. One person died in the city of Manado after being trapped in the rubble of a collapsed building belonging to the local sports authority. Authorities reported minor tsunami waves reaching up to 0.75 meters in North Minahasa, though a wider tsunami warning issued for Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia was lifted approximately two hours later. The Indonesian meteorology agency BMKG recorded around 50 aftershocks, the largest being magnitude 5.8. Emergency services continue to monitor the area, which is part of the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire.
