Diplomatic efforts and conflict escalation during Easter period
On Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposed an Easter ceasefire, aimed at pausing strikes on energy infrastructure. Zelenskyy criticized Russia for responding to this offer with continued airstrikes, including the use of Iranian-designed Shahed drones. Simultaneously, Zelenskyy held remote talks with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, Senator Lindsey Graham, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to discuss potential peace terms and security guarantees. While Ukraine seeks to use the ceasefire to signal a pathway for diplomacy, the Russian Foreign Ministry, via spokesperson Maria Zakharova, dismissed the proposal as a public relations maneuver intended to allow Ukrainian forces to regroup. Talks between Kyiv and Moscow remain deadlocked over territorial disputes, specifically concerning the Donbas region. Zelenskyy indicated that teams are working to strengthen a document on U.S. security guarantees for a future peace deal. Meanwhile, the conflict continues to be influenced by shifting U.S. priorities and internal tensions within the NATO alliance.
