Cyprus House of Representatives to vote on new election rules for the speaker
The plenary session of the House of Representatives is scheduled to vote today on a revised regulatory framework for electing the President of the House. The proposed text, drafted by the Committee on Rules, introduces specific procedures for the election process, including nomination rules and a requirement for an absolute majority in the first round of a roll-call vote. In the event of a tie during the first round that prevents the selection of the top two candidates for a second round, a repeat vote will be conducted. Furthermore, the new regulations mandate the appointment of a substitute to preside over the House when the President performs presidential duties or travels abroad. The rules also clarify that if the eldest member of Parliament is a candidate for the speaker position, the chair will be held by the next eldest present member during the proceedings. Additionally, the revised text encompasses broader operational changes for the legislative body, including the implementation of live-streamed committee meetings. These legislative updates aim to modernize parliamentary functions and ensure transparency in the administrative processes of the House.
