Escalating cross-border hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah continue despite ceasefire
Persistent military hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah have continued throughout early May 2026, despite a ceasefire agreement that has been in place since April 17. Reports from the Lebanese Ministry of Health indicate that recent Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon resulted in multiple fatalities, with casualty counts varying between seven and twelve depending on the specific report. Targeted locations included the Sidon district, Nabatieh, and areas south of Beirut, where infrastructure and vehicles were struck. The Israeli military stated it conducted operations against 85 Hezbollah targets, including weapons storage facilities and underground manufacturing sites, following evacuation orders for nine southern Lebanese villages. Hezbollah responded by launching rocket barrages and drone attacks against Israeli military positions in northern Israel and along the border, including a base south of Nahariya. These ongoing clashes occur ahead of scheduled diplomatic discussions between Lebanon and Israel in Washington, D.C., on May 14 and 15. Previous reports have noted casualties among rescue personnel, including members of the Lebanese Civil Defense and the Islamic Health Committee.
