Fatal migrant boat incidents reported in Mediterranean and Aegean seas
Two separate migrant boat tragedies occurred, resulting in multiple fatalities. In Italy, the coast guard recovered 18 bodies from a boat 85 miles off the coast of Lampedusa, near Tunisia, while five survivors remain in critical condition. Simultaneously, the Turkish coast guard reported a separate incident off the coast of Bodrum, where 18 people drowned after their inflatable boat sank. According to Turkish authorities, they rescued 21 individuals after the vessel reportedly refused to stop and proceeded at high speed before taking on water and sinking. The Turkish operation took place around 06:00 local time. The International Organization for Migration indicates that at least 831 migrants have died or gone missing in the Mediterranean region since the beginning of the year. These incidents highlight the ongoing risks associated with irregular migration routes. Authorities in both Italy and Turkey are continuing to manage search and rescue efforts for those involved in similar crossings.
