Severe dust and wind conditions disrupt transport and infrastructure in Crete
On April 1, 2026, Crete and the Cyclades experienced severe weather conditions, including intense African dust concentrations and gale-force winds. Research from the National Observatory of Athens indicated that particulate matter levels in regions like Rethymno reached or exceeded 1,000 micrograms per cubic meter. The dust caused extremely poor visibility and created hazardous, suffocating air quality across major cities including Heraklion, Rethymno, and Chania. Powerful southern winds led to the cancellation of flights at Heraklion airport and forced maritime vessels to remain docked. In Ierapetra, high waves reached residential areas of the old town, while storm damage was reported to greenhouses and factory walls. A tornado incident in Pachi Ammos caused a truck to overturn. Authorities advised residents to limit unnecessary travel as the weather impacted normal activity throughout the island.
