Parliamentary report releases findings on the July 2025 Cyprus wildfires

A parliamentary report examining the deadly wildfires that began on July 23, 2025, in the mountainous region of Limassol and Paphos has been released. The disaster resulted in two deaths, the destruction of dozens of homes, and the loss of over 120 square kilometers of land, representing approximately 1.3% of the island's territory. The report highlights severe systemic failures, including a lack of coordination between agencies, poor crisis management, and the failure to implement existing fire prevention plans. Members of the Interior, Agriculture, and Environment Committees identified significant shortcomings in the operational readiness and evacuation procedures of the relevant authorities. The document specifically notes that the Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panagiotou, and the ministry's general director failed to provide sufficient explanations during the inquiry. Furthermore, the report addresses the absence of a key coordinator who was in Australia during the critical period of the fire. Despite the findings of major operational lapses, the committees noted that no specific sanctions or resignations have occurred to date. The report will be submitted to the Plenary of the House of Representatives for further review.
