Parliamentary report on the July 2025 Limassol wildfires
On July 23, 2025, a major wildfire broke out in the village of Malia in the mountainous region of Limassol, followed by a second fire in Paphos. The blaze destroyed over 120 square kilometers of land, accounting for 1.3% of the island's territory, and resulted in two fatalities. Numerous homes and private properties were destroyed, causing significant environmental damage. Joint parliamentary committees on Interior, Agriculture, and Environment investigated the state's response, identifying failures in operational readiness, coordination, and evacuation procedures. The report specifically noted the absence of a key coordinator who was in Australia during the crisis. While the report highlights systemic weaknesses, it does not assign direct individual accountability or impose sanctions. Affected citizens have expressed frustration, noting that no officials have been held responsible to date. The findings will be presented to the Plenary Session of the House of Representatives for review.
