Unused beds at Larnaca General Hospital cause patient delays
Reports published in the newspaper Politis highlight that a significant number of beds at Larnaca General Hospital remain inactive, leading to long waiting times for patients. Investigations suggest that approximately 25 beds are not currently in use, while some departments utilize only 18 to 20 out of 30 available beds. Patients and complainants attribute these operational gaps to a shortage of nursing staff. The issue became particularly evident during the winter season when influenza A cases increased. One patient reported being held on a stretcher in the Accident and Emergency Department for 48 hours awaiting a vacant bed. The State Health Services Organization (OKYPY) is currently under scrutiny regarding the management of these resources. Critics argue that the situation is worsening due to the growing local population. The hospital admits patients through either the Accident and Emergency Department or via Outpatient Clinics.
