United Arab Emirates reportedly considering military involvement in Strait of Hormuz security
According to reports by the Wall Street Journal, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is preparing to potentially support a US-led coalition to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. UAE officials are reportedly seeking a UN Security Council resolution to authorize such an operation. Proposed contributions from the UAE include minesweeping efforts and other logistical support services. Furthermore, Emirati officials have suggested that the United States should take control of strategic islands in the passage, specifically naming Abu Musa, which has been under Iranian control for five decades and is claimed by the UAE. The UAE Foreign Ministry has officially cited existing UN resolutions condemning Iranian attacks and a decision by the International Maritime Organization regarding the closure of the straits. This move would mark the first time a Gulf state directly participates in a military conflict of this nature following alleged Iranian aggression. The UAE maintains that there is broad global consensus on the necessity of keeping the strait open.
