D-Day veteran Harold Fenwick celebrates 103rd birthday in Cyprus

Harold Fenwick, a British veteran who participated in the Normandy landings on June 6, 1944, recently celebrated his 103rd birthday in Cyprus. Originally from Glasgow, Fenwick was 21 years old when he joined over 60,000 British troops in the D-Day operation. During the subsequent advance through France, he took command of his unit after his superior officer went missing. Fenwick was eventually evacuated to Britain after sustaining significant injuries from a mortar shell. He recalls hearing Winston Churchill announce the end of the war while serving as a driver in Edinburgh. During the conflict, Fenwick lost his brother, who remains buried in France. He later raised three children with his wife, Sheila, and is currently supported by the Armed Forces charity SSAFA. He currently lives as a widower in Cyprus, where he receives regular visits from caseworkers.
