European Commission prepares energy crisis mitigation measures
The European Commission is preparing a toolkit of measures to address the ongoing energy crisis, which will be presented in the coming days. European Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen, speaking from Brussels during an informal Council of Energy Ministers meeting held in Nicosia, highlighted the severity of the situation by warning that consequences will be long-term. Even if the war concludes soon, he stated, a return to normality is not expected in the foreseeable future due to damaged energy infrastructure. The Commission is endorsing a 10-point plan proposed by the International Energy Agency (IEA) to reduce energy demand. Key recommendations include limiting private car usage, promoting remote work, strengthening public transportation, and lowering vehicle speed limits. According to an IEA report published on March 20, road transport accounts for 45% of oil demand. Jorgensen emphasized that achieving energy independence is now essential for both economic stability and security, extending beyond climate goals.
