Parliamentary review regarding replacement of defective Takata airbags

During a parliamentary Committee on Transport hearing, Maria Loui, mother of Kyriakos Oxinos who died due to a faulty Takata airbag, reported a lack of transparency regarding replacement parts. Loui stated that since February 2026, she has been unable to confirm with local dealerships what type of airbag was installed in her family vehicle to replace the defective one. Dealership representatives allegedly told her it was possible that another Takata product was installed. Independent MP Irene Charalambidou also testified that she had to contact manufacturers in Japan directly to obtain information about her own vehicle's safety equipment. The Department of Road Transport and the Consumer Protection Service faced questions regarding their oversight and current regulations. On February 19, 2026, Loui filed a formal complaint with the Consumer Protection Service, which reportedly claimed it lacked the jurisdiction to handle the matter. Concerns were raised that replacement airbags might be manufactured using materials identical to the hazardous Takata units.
