Nasa prepares for Artemis II lunar mission

Nasa is preparing to launch the Artemis II mission, marking the first crewed flight to the Moon in over 53 years. The crew consists of three American and one Canadian astronaut who will travel aboard an Orion capsule launched by a Space Launch System rocket. The 10-day test mission will orbit the Moon and reach further into space than previous human missions. This project is part of the broader Artemis program, which has cost at least $93 billion since 2012. The mission aims to pave the way for future lunar landings, specifically at the lunar south pole by 2028, and eventual human activity on the Moon. Researchers highlight that the Moon contains valuable resources like rare earth elements, iron, titanium, and water trapped in minerals or at the poles. The initiative also serves as a strategic effort to maintain U.S. leadership in space amid growing competition from China, which aims to land humans on the Moon by 2030. Furthermore, the Moon is viewed as a critical stepping stone for future crewed exploration of Mars.
