Artemis II crew breaks human distance record from Earth

The NASA Artemis II mission crew, consisting of Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen, has officially surpassed the distance record set by Apollo 13 in 1970. The spacecraft Orion is projected to reach a maximum distance of approximately 406,708 kilometers (252,757 to 252,760 miles) from Earth as it navigates behind the far side of the Moon. During this transit, the crew will experience a period of signal loss lasting about 40 minutes due to the lunar mass blocking communications. The mission, scheduled for 10 days, includes extensive scientific observations, lunar surface imaging, and the testing of critical spacecraft systems. NASA reports that the crew has encountered persistent issues with the Universal Waste Management System toilet, caused by ice accumulation, which the team is managing with improvised protocols. The mission serves as a preparatory step for future human landings on the Moon, utilizing gravity to transition Orion into its next flight phase.
