EU Regional Firefighting Center to be inaugurated in Cyprus
President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are scheduled to inaugurate the EU Regional Firefighting Center in Paphos. The ceremony will take place between April 23 and 24, alongside the informal European Council summit. Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis announced that the initiative stems from a proposal by the Republic of Cyprus to enhance the European civil protection framework. The facility is intended to serve as a regional hub for addressing forest fires across the Eastern Mediterranean. According to the government, the center aims to improve operational response to climate-related challenges in the region. Furthermore, it is expected to foster coordinated action and regional cooperation among neighboring states. The project is presented as an effort to upgrade Cyprus’s strategic role in European civil protection policy.
