Journalist Makarios Drousiotis and Cypriot authorities in dispute over allegations

Journalist Makarios Drousiotis has made serious allegations against public officials, political figures, and businesspeople, prompting an investigation by the Cyprus Police. President Nikos Christodoulides stated that the government is treating the matter with seriousness and has instructed the Police and the Ministry of Justice to proceed with an inquiry. Drousiotis has expressed public distrust in the local authorities, citing past experiences involving a 2012 traffic case and a 2020 telecommunications data breach complaint. He has requested the appointment of an independent criminal investigator to ensure the integrity of the process. While the Police have urged Drousiotis to submit his evidence without delay, the journalist insists on being accompanied by his lawyer during the testimony. Drousiotis claims that authorities might be surprised by the evidence, while the government maintains it is ready to make necessary decisions once the facts are reviewed. Both parties are currently coordinating the formal submission of the relevant materials.
