New fisheries regulations 2026 enforced in Cyprus
The Department of Fisheries and Marine Research (DFMR) has implemented the Fisheries Regulations 2026, which were approved by the House of Representatives and published on March 20, 2026. These regulations impose fines of up to €20,000 or imprisonment of up to one year for violations. The rules prohibit the harassment, feeding, or disruption of protected species, specifically citing dolphins, whales, and the European eel (Anguilla anguilla). For sea turtles, it is illegal to damage or relocate nests and eggs, or to interfere with protective equipment. Driving vehicles on nesting beaches and protected areas is strictly banned. At Limni beach, between May 15 and September 30, the placement of umbrellas, beds, tents, or caravans is prohibited. Additionally, motorised vessels are restricted in the Polis-Gialia area, and access to Mediterranean monk seal caves requires a special permit.
