Authorities announce strict measures against illegal activities related to Easter bonfires

Cyprus Minister of Justice and Public Order Kostas Fytiris announced the immediate implementation of intensive police and fire service inspections to curb illegal activities associated with the traditional Easter bonfire custom, known as lampratzia. The decision follows a meeting on March 31, 2026, with the Union of Municipalities, the Union of Communities, the Police, and the Fire Service. Authorities expressed deep concern over rising juvenile delinquency, including the theft of materials for bonfires, the use of fireworks, and vandalism in neighborhoods. Minister Fytiris stated that offenders, including minors, will be arrested, and parents will be held accountable for the damages caused by their children. The initiative aims to prevent risks to public safety, referencing past incidents that led to serious injuries and a death. Reports indicate that local authorities in areas like Limassol have already begun seizing stockpiled wood and materials. Furthermore, specific parishes, such as that of Profitis Ilias, have decided to cancel the lighting of bonfires entirely due to the frequency of disturbances. Local officials and residents have filed numerous complaints regarding constant noise and antisocial behavior.
