High incidence of thyroid cancer in Cyprus reported
Dr. Stelia Ioannidou Kadi, an associate professor of endocrinology at the University of Nicosia, has reported that the incidence of thyroid cancer in Cyprus is nearly four times higher than the European Union average. She further highlighted that the rate of thyroid cancer among children and adolescents in Cyprus is among the highest globally. Currently, there is no scientific data identifying the specific cause of these high figures. The expert noted that no evidence currently links the regional environmental impact of conflicts and wars to these statistics. Known risk factors for thyroid cancer include childhood radiation therapy, exposure to radioactive radiation, pre-existing thyroid conditions, family history, being over forty, obesity, and iodine deficiency. Dr. Kadi emphasized that thyroid cancer has a high cure rate when diagnosed early. Proper management by a specialized team of physicians remains essential for patient outcomes.
