Nicosia court imposes fines for fatal workplace accident

The Nicosia District Court issued fines totaling €12,000 following a fatal workplace accident. The case, brought by the Department of Labour Inspection, resulted in penalties for multiple parties including the employer, the project contractor, and a project supervisor. P. Orphanides Steel Constructions Ltd was fined €6,500 for failing to install required safety railings at least 1.1 meters high on a mezzanine floor, which directly contributed to a worker falling 3.37 meters to their death. Additionally, the employer was cited for inadequate supervision of workplace activities. Mont Blanc Constructions Ltd, serving as the main contractor, was fined €1,500 for safety violations that endangered personnel. A project supervisor and an individual also received fines of €2,000 each for failures related to health and safety planning and coordination. The court rulings address significant breaches of safety legislation that exposed employees to preventable risks.
