Escalation in drone attacks between Russia and Ukraine

Russia and Ukraine have intensified drone strikes against each other, targeting both civilian areas and critical energy infrastructure. In Ukraine, Russian attacks in regions including Cherkasy, Kherson, Poltava, Dnipropetrovsk, and Sumy have resulted in multiple civilian deaths and numerous injuries, with residential buildings and infrastructure damaged. The Ukrainian Air Force reported intercepting hundreds of drones, though many hit civilian targets. Simultaneously, Ukraine launched a series of drone strikes against Russian energy infrastructure, specifically targeting oil facilities in the Leningrad region, including the port of Ust-Luga and the Kirishi refinery. Russian officials reported that debris from intercepted drones injured three people, including two children, and caused damage to buildings in the Leningrad region. Satellite data confirmed fires at oil sites in Ust-Luga and Primorsk, leading to a temporary halt in oil export operations at these Baltic ports. While Ukraine characterizes its strikes as a necessary response to weaken Moscow’s war economy, the Russian government maintains that its operations target military and industrial assets. Western intelligence and reports indicate that these mutual strikes have disrupted energy supply chains and increased the humanitarian toll of the ongoing conflict.
