Fatal electrocution incident in Lefkoniko
On the morning of the incident at approximately 11:30, 43-year-old Erol Demir died from electrocution while working on electrical infrastructure in the rural area of Lefkoniko. A 15-year-old named Aras Demir was also injured in the incident and is currently receiving treatment at the Famagusta Hospital. Police reported that the accident occurred during the installation of a lighting pole involving high-voltage lines. Ahmet Tugcu, head of the electricity authority labor union, claimed the victim was a private sector worker performing emergency repairs amid a general strike. While the electricity authority labeled Demir a martyr of duty, union leadership accused the administration of utilizing non-striking personnel for work that led to the tragedy. The authority rejected these accusations, stating the work was related to private infrastructure and criticized the union for politicizing the event.
