Eurostat reports 2024 municipal waste trends in Cyprus and the EU
Data released by Eurostat on Monday shows that municipal waste per capita in Cyprus reached 688 kg in 2024, rising from 661 kg in 2023 and 626 kg in 2015. Across the European Union, the average waste generation per person was 517 kg in 2024, an increase of 6 kg compared to 2023 and 8% higher than in 2014. Member states display significant variance; Austria recorded 782 kg per person in 2023, while Romania recorded the lowest at 305 kg. Since 2014, waste levels have increased in 20 EU countries, with Belgium, the Czech Republic, and Austria seeing the largest rises. Conversely, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Finland experienced the most significant reductions in waste production. Regarding recycling, the EU reached a rate of 48.1% in 2024, equating to 248 kg of recycled waste per person. This is a slight improvement from the 48.0% recycling rate recorded in 2023 and significantly higher than the 43.0% rate reported in 2014.
