European Commission approves 1.5 billion euro work program for defense industry

On Monday, the European Commission approved a 1.5 billion euro work program under the European Defence Industry Programme (EDIP). This initiative aims to modernize the European defense industry, expand production capacity, and improve technological resilience. Key objectives include strengthening industrial capabilities, fostering cooperation with Ukraine, and facilitating joint European defense procurement. The program also seeks to support European defense projects of common interest. Executive Vice-President for Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, Henna Virkkunen, stated that the move is a critical step in enhancing Europe's defense capabilities. Commissioner for Defense and Space, Andrius Kubilius, noted that the EDIP regulation has been transformed into actionable opportunities within a few months. The strategy is designed to address current and future security challenges through innovation and collaboration. The implementation will involve close cooperation with various stakeholders to ensure the efficient achievement of these objectives.
