Protests erupt in northern Nicosia over cost of living adjustments

On the morning of the protest, 62 unions and organizations launched a general strike in the northern part of Nicosia to oppose a government bill regarding cost of living adjustments (ATA). Thousands of workers gathered outside the building housing the local administration to demand the withdrawal of the bill, which postpones wage increases until 2027. The situation escalated when demonstrators broke through police barricades and entered the building, leading to clashes with security forces. Police responded with tear gas, water cannons, batons, and shields to disperse the crowd, resulting in multiple injuries and arrests. Several opposition politicians, including members of the CTP party, were also affected by the chemical agents used. Protesters rejected government attempts at dialogue, calling for the resignation of the administration instead. The area remains under heavy security restrictions as unions continue their demonstrations, vowing to maintain their position until the legislative proposal is retracted.
