EAC proposes new power cable routes for Acheritou area
The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has presented two alternative routes for power cables to supply electricity to the Acheritou area. This development follows a long-standing refusal by the Dhekelia British Sovereign Base authorities to grant permission for such infrastructure. The British administration previously cited concerns that power cables could interfere with electronic surveillance antenna installations located within the base territory. Acheritou, situated near Engomi, requires power for agricultural activities and local churches. The House Energy Committee, led by Chairman Kyriakos Hadjiyiannis, held a meeting on the site with the EAC, the Acheritou community leader, and the Civil Administrator of the Bases. The proposed routes were designed specifically to bypass the sensitive areas housing the British surveillance equipment. Both the EAC and the Bases’ administration participated in the discussions to find a mutually acceptable solution. The EAC is now expected to proceed with the technical planning of these options.
