Avakas Gorge trail remains closed due to safety concerns

The Department of Forests has announced that the Avakas Gorge trail in the Akamas National Forest Park remains closed until further notice. This decision follows a specific incident on March 25, 2026, involving the entrapment of hikers within the gorge. Closure orders have been in effect since December 6, 2025, due to hazardous conditions, including adverse weather, high water levels, slippery terrain, and the risk of falling rocks and landslides. Prohibitory signage has been installed at the entrance to ensure visitor safety. The Department of Forests apologizes for any inconvenience caused by this measure. Officials stated that the site will remain inaccessible until it is deemed completely safe for public entry. A follow-up announcement will be issued once the situation changes.
