Avakas Gorge remains closed to the public

The Forestry Department has announced that the Avakas Gorge trail in Akamas National Forest Park remains closed until further notice due to safety concerns. The closure was initially implemented on December 6, 2025, following reports of hazardous conditions including increased water flow, slippery surfaces, and the risk of rockfalls. The measure was reaffirmed after an incident on March 25, 2026, when 31 hikers required rescue. A group of 26 people called for assistance at 1:00 PM and were hoisted to safety, followed by a separate rescue of five additional individuals at 4:00 PM. Prohibition signs have been installed at the gorge entrance to inform visitors of the restrictions. The department stated that the trail will only reopen once experts confirm that all safety risks have been eliminated. Officials apologized for the inconvenience, emphasizing that the decision is strictly aimed at protecting public safety.
