UNFICYP head meets with Tufan Erhurman to discuss mission priorities
On Monday, the Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Colin Stewart, held a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. During the discussion, Stewart briefed Erhurman on the mission's activities conducted over the past six months and addressed the recent renewal of the UNFICYP mandate by the UN Security Council in late January. The meeting focused on outlining four key operational priorities for the upcoming months. The first priority involves improving operational efficiency and resilience amidst current liquidity challenges and resource shortages. The second focus is on ensuring consistent patrolling and monitoring of the buffer zone to maintain stability and prevent incidents. The third priority concerns ongoing efforts regarding the restoration and reinforcement of infrastructure. Notably, the broader political issues surrounding the Cyprus problem were not part of the formal agenda during this meeting. Both parties emphasized the importance of ensuring peace and stability across the island.
