Consumer association calls for inclusion of heating oil in fuel tax subsidy
The Cyprus Consumers' Association has requested that the Ministry of Finance extend the reduced fuel consumption tax rate to cover heating oil. President Nikos Christodoulides previously announced a reduction of 8.33 cents per litre on petrol and diesel from April 1 to June 30, 2026, while also canceling planned green taxes. The association notes that heating oil prices have risen by an average of 32 cents per litre since March 1, 2026, with further increases expected by the end of next week. According to the Statistical Service, average monthly consumption of heating oil between April and June is 2,549 tonnes. The association emphasizes that consumption remains significant during this period, particularly in mountainous areas where use continues until mid-May. They argue that excluding heating oil from the subsidy is unjustified given the recent price volatility. The government has yet to adjust the current policy to include heating oil.
