New migrant pre-removal detention centre opens in Limnes

The first section of a new pre-removal detention centre for migrants has opened in Limnes, near the village of Menoyia. The Ministry of Justice and Public Order announced that foreign nationals previously held in Menoyia have already been transferred to the new facility. The project has an estimated budget of approximately 100 million euros, with 90 percent of the funding provided by the European Union. According to the government, the facility has an initial capacity of 1,000 people and is designed to improve operational management of migration while reducing the presence of migrants in urban centers. Authorities stated the site meets European standards and ensures the protection of human rights. Conversely, local residents, including the mukhtar of Anglisides, Elena Sakkada, have criticized the project. Critics claim the government has failed to deliver promised compensatory infrastructure projects to the surrounding communities.
