Mothers hold event in Nicosia to advocate for justice

On Saturday afternoon, an event titled 'The Voice of Mothers' took place at the Journalists' House in Nicosia. The event featured five women from different countries who spoke about the loss of their children or family members due to conflict and violence. Participants included Harita Mantoles and Andriana Nikolaou from Cyprus, Maria Karystianou from Greece, Hiba Wishia from Palestine, and Olena Varenik Neokleou from Ukraine. Harita Mantoles, a figure associated with the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, recounted witnessing the killing of her husband, father, and five relatives in the Pente Mili area when she was 27. The participants emphasized the ongoing need for truth, legal accountability, and the punishment of those responsible for the deaths of their loved ones. The speakers shared their personal narratives to highlight the persistent nature of their trauma and their search for justice. The gathering served as a platform for women from diverse geopolitical contexts to unite in their call for accountability.
