Environment commissioner reports record greenhouse gas levels in Cyprus
During the Earth Hour 2026 event held in Troodos, Cyprus Environment Commissioner Antonia Theodosiou announced that greenhouse gas concentrations have reached historically high levels. According to research from the Cyprus Institute published in January 2025, the primary sources of these emissions remain electricity generation and the transport sector. Despite these figures, the Commissioner noted a positive development reported by Eurostat in February 2026, which indicated a 5.2 percent reduction in national emissions. Theodosiou cautioned against complacency, emphasizing the need for continued efforts to transition toward a sustainable development model. She highlighted that environmental strain extends beyond gas emissions to include severe water scarcity, which is currently affecting daily life and agriculture. Furthermore, the Commissioner identified desertification as an ongoing challenge that requires a cohesive approach between public policy and individual responsibility. She also underscored the importance of protecting the Troodos geopark as a vital geological resource for the country.
