United Kingdom plans antenna installation at RAF Akrotiri amidst regional security concerns
The United Kingdom has notified the Cypriot government of its intent to install 32 antennas at the RAF Akrotiri base, covering an area of 340 square kilometers. In response to local concerns, base authorities offered to install three electromagnetic radiation meters and publish environmental studies. However, Akrotiri mayor Pantellis Georgiou opposes the project and announced plans to challenge it in court, citing potential health risks. The government has requested updated epidemiological data from the health ministry to address these concerns. These developments occur as Cyprus negotiates with the UK regarding the future of the British bases, following a recent drone strike on the airbase. Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis confirmed that preparations for these negotiations are ongoing at all levels. Additionally, the government has sought legal advice regarding the 1960 Treaty of Establishment to understand its position on sovereignty and security matters. The situation remains complex as officials work to balance regional security interests with local governance and health requirements.
