British bases propose installation of 32 antennas in Akrotiri

The British Sovereign Base Areas administration has submitted a formal request to the relevant committee to expropriate approximately 340 skales of land in the Akrotiri area for the installation of 32 new antennas. Local authorities, led by the Mayor of Kourion, Pantelis Georgiou, strongly oppose the project, citing concerns over public health and environmental impact. The municipality has announced its intention to pursue legal action to block the development, arguing that the site is already overburdened. In response, the British base authorities have offered to install three electromagnetic radiation meters and publish both the results and an environmental impact study to address public concern. However, local stakeholders point out that the last epidemiological study in the area dates back to 2009 and demand updated data from the Ministry of Health. The Cyprus government is aware of the situation and indicates that the matter will be part of broader discussions regarding the status of the British bases. The Green Party has criticized the move as an example of colonial-style arbitrary decision-making that could affect the Ramsar-protected wetland ecosystem.
