British bases plan for new antenna installation at Akrotiri sparks local opposition
British military authorities have proposed installing 32 new antennas within the Akrotiri base area in Cyprus. This project requires the expropriation of 340 skala of land, an action that has drawn strong opposition from the Mayor of Kourion, Pantelis Georgiou, and the Cyprus Green Party. The Green Party expressed concerns regarding potential health risks from increased electromagnetic radiation and negative impacts on the local ecosystem, which is protected under the Ramsar Convention. In response to health concerns, the British authorities have offered to install three electromagnetic radiation monitors and share the results of their environmental studies publicly. Mayor Georgiou has rejected the proposal and announced that the municipality intends to pursue legal action to halt the project. Furthermore, he has requested updated epidemiological data from the Ministry of Health. Both the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Interior have been informed of the situation as of March 28, 2026.
