Cyprus aims to export natural gas to Europe via Egypt by 2027-2028

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides announced that the country plans to achieve its first sale of offshore natural gas to Europe via Egypt by 2027-2028. This statement was made ahead of his attendance at the EGYPES 2026 conference, held in Cairo from March 30 to April 1 at the Al Manara International Conference Centre. The President is scheduled to meet with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and the CEO of TotalEnergies to discuss regional energy cooperation and bilateral relations. The government seeks to advance the commercialization of offshore reserves, specifically noting progress in the Kronos and Aphrodite fields. Despite initial discoveries within the exclusive economic zone dating back to 2011, there has been limited progress in gas utilization until recently. During the trip, officials expect to sign new agreements related to energy infrastructure. The initiative aims to enhance energy security for both Cyprus and the broader Mediterranean region. This shift marks a strategic effort to capitalize on the country's long-dormant energy resources.
