Recent series of residential fires and gas explosions across Cyprus
The Cyprus Fire Service responded to multiple incidents on March 28 and 29, 2026, including several residential fires. In Latsia, a fire caused by an electric heater damaged a room, leading to the precautionary hospitalization of two residents and one neighbor. In Strovolos, a gas leak caused a violent explosion in an auxiliary kitchen, resulting in the collapse of a canopy and burn injuries to the female owner. Separately, a central heating boiler caught fire in Palouriotissa, while in Polemidia, a fire occurred in a kitchen during an attempt to change a gas cylinder, causing the owner's precautionary hospitalization. Additionally, a fire broke out in an abandoned house in Drouseia involving discarded materials, with police currently investigating the cause. Overall, the Fire Service managed 33 incidents within a 24-hour window, including 24 fires. No fatalities were reported across these incidents.
