Former Nepalese Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli arrested
Nepal's former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and his former Interior Minister Ramesh Lekhak were arrested on charges related to the deadly suppression of protests in September 2025. An investigative commission report recommended criminal charges against Oli and other top officials, citing the death of at least 76 people and the injury of over 2,400 during the unrest on September 8 and 9. The protests involved the 'Generation Z' movement, which led to the government's collapse six months ago. Following his arrest, the 74-year-old Oli was transferred to a hospital for treatment of heart and kidney conditions. The arrests occur shortly after the new government, led by 35-year-old former rapper and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, took office following his party's victory in the March 5 parliamentary elections. Police spokesman Pawan Kumar Bhattarai confirmed the detention is for investigation purposes.
