Cyprus police continue efforts to curb illegal firecrackers and bonfire activities before Easter
Cyprus police, in coordination with the Fire Service and local authorities, are intensifying a campaign against illegal firecrackers and uncontrolled bonfires known as 'lampratzies' ahead of Holy Week. Police pyrotechnic expert Paris Kyriakou reported that 11,000 pyrotechnic items were confiscated so far in 2026, primarily firecrackers, compared to 20,500 items in 2025. Andreas Vyras, President of the Union of Cyprus Municipalities and Mayor of Larnaca, expressed concern over the safety risks and confirmed that local crews are actively collecting materials intended for bonfires to prevent hazards. Authorities highlighted the dangers associated with these activities, citing incidents from Easter 2025. These include the death of a 22-year-old at Konstantinoupoleos Gymnasium due to a falling pole, the injury of a 40-year-old by a thrown firecracker, and the maiming of two minors by factory-made and improvised explosive devices. The crackdown began two months ago and remains ongoing as officials warn of life-threatening risks to both participants and bystanders.
