Fire at Limassol police station and explosion at Deryneia residence
On Thursday, April 2, a fire broke out in the detention cells of the Limassol Police Headquarters around 4:50 p.m. after a prisoner set his cell on fire. The detainee, who had been transferred from Paphos earlier that day following an escape attempt at the Paphos District Court, was taken to the hospital along with three other prisoners and four police officers suffering from respiratory issues. One prisoner was intubated and moved to the Nicosia General Hospital burn unit. Reports indicate the facility was overcrowded, holding 42 inmates instead of the authorized 32. Separately, a high-powered explosive device detonated at 1:30 a.m. on Thursday outside the home of a 49-year-old businessman in Deryneia. No injuries were reported, though the garage door sustained damage. The Famagusta Criminal Investigation Department is investigating the motive, noting that the victim has no prior police record.
