Fire at Limassol police detention centre leaves detainee in critical condition
On Thursday, April 2, 2026, at approximately 16:40, a fire broke out at the holding cells of the Limassol Police Headquarters. Preliminary investigations suggest the blaze started in a cell where a 39-year-old remand prisoner was being held alone. The individual sustained second and third-degree burns and was transferred to the burns unit at Nicosia General Hospital, where he remains sedated in serious condition. During the evacuation, two other detainees and four police officers were treated at Limassol General Hospital for smoke inhalation and subsequently discharged. Following their relocation to Paphos, four additional detainees complained of respiratory discomfort and received treatment at Paphos General Hospital before being released. Criminal and administrative investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of the fire, which is suspected to have been deliberately set. On Friday, a separate, unrelated fire involving burning tires occurred at a technical school opposite the police station, causing no reported injuries. All detainees from the original facility have been relocated to other districts.
