Operations suspended at 11 livestock units in Pergamos
On March 28, 2026, the Veterinary Services of Cyprus suspended the operations of 11 livestock units in the Pergamos area. The move involves eight cattle farms and three sheep and goat farms that were previously supplying milk to three dairies in government-controlled areas. The suspension aims to prevent the distribution of milk from units operating in the Buffer Zone and the British Bases, following concerns about non-compliance with Cypriot legislation and unregistered facilities. Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Andreas Gregoriou, confirmed the measure will remain in effect until inspections and investigations are concluded. This decision follows a risk analysis related to the presence of foot-and-mouth disease, which was detected in the occupied areas on December 15, 2025, and subsequently reported in government-controlled areas on February 19, 2026. Reports indicate a complex landscape in the area, involving both registered units and unregistered operations across the Buffer Zone and the British Bases territory. The government is working to determine the status of these farms and ensure public health safety.
