Nasa prepares for upcoming Artemis II crewed lunar mission
Four astronauts have arrived in Florida to finalize preparations for the Artemis II mission, which is the first crewed flight to the Moon in over five decades. The crew consists of NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, alongside Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen. The mission is scheduled to launch from the Kennedy Space Center between April 1 and April 6, or alternatively on April 30, 2026. This ten-day mission will perform a flyby around the Moon to test life support, navigation, communications, and heat shield performance. While not intended to land on the lunar surface, the flight will take the crew further into space than any previous human mission. The launch was originally targeted for 2024 but faced multiple delays due to technical issues, including hydrogen and helium leaks. Additionally, launch opportunities are constrained by lunar orbital mechanics, limiting windows to approximately one week each month.
