Escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon

Since the beginning of hostilities on March 2, 2026, Israel has conducted air and ground operations in southern Lebanon. The Israeli military confirmed on March 29 the death of Sergeant Moshe Yitzhak Hakohen Katz, bringing the total number of Israeli soldiers killed in the conflict to five. The Israeli military estimates that at least 700 Hezbollah fighters have been killed during this period, while independent sources linked to Hezbollah provide a lower estimate of over 400 fighters. The Lebanese Ministry of Health reports a total of 1,142 deaths in Lebanon resulting from Israeli operations, including 122 children, 83 women, and 42 medical personnel. This casualty figure does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. Furthermore, Israeli forces have reported multiple injuries among their personnel, including a soldier and a combat officer who were severely wounded recently.
