Cyprus government proposes meeting date to Turkish Cypriot leadership
Government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis announced on Friday that the Greek Cypriot side has proposed a specific date in April for a new meeting between President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. This proposal was communicated through negotiator Menelaos Menelaou, though the Turkish Cypriot side has not yet responded. The announcement followed a meeting at the Presidential Palace between President Christodoulides and Khassim Diagne, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General. Discussions included the ongoing presence of UNFICYP and violations in the buffer zone and the city of Varosha, referencing UN Security Council Resolution 2815 of 2026. President Christodoulides also reviewed his March discussions with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Brussels regarding the resumption of negotiations. While Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman recently criticized the President’s statements as inconsistent, the Greek Cypriot government has declined to engage in a public confrontation. The administration maintains its commitment to a bizonal, bicommunal federation based on UN Security Council resolutions.
