UN special representative meets with Cyprus president to discuss UNFICYP role

Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General Colin Stewart met with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides on Friday to discuss the operational priorities of UNFICYP following its mandate renewal in January. The discussion focused on maintaining security within the buffer zone and preventing regional miscalculations amid increased military presence in the area. Reports indicate the deployment of Greek, Turkish, and British military aircraft and naval assets has heightened security concerns for all involved parties. The Cypriot government reiterated its political will to resume meaningful negotiations and has proposed a meeting between the leaders for April. Stewart is scheduled to meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman on Monday, March 30, at 11 a.m. The UN envoy emphasized the need for continuous communication between both sides to manage tensions effectively. Additionally, the UN mission is currently focusing on operational efficiency and resilience within the current economic climate.
